The National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country. The main mission of CNR consists in developing research for the promotion of innovation and competitiveness of the industrial system and providing technologies and solutions to emerging public and private needs.

The three individual Institutes of CNR, involved in the pegaso project, are as follows:

  • Istituto di Bioimmagini e Fisiologia Molecolare (IBFM) / Institute of molecular bioimaging and physiology - IBFM exploits a widespread and many-level bio-medical activity research, involving imaging and molecular diagnostic techniques, and spanning from the microscopical aspects up to the full organism. In addition, it provides side approaches to computationally directed strategies. Namely, on this interdisciplinary background, a wide array of techniques is deployed at all levels, bridging molecular diagnostics in neurology and oncology, to cellular and systemic physiology and physiopathology, muscle metabolism and neurodynamics both at experimental and clinical level, granting for a full-blown translational approach from pre-clinical to clinical research and viceversa.

  • Istituto di Tecnologie Biomediche (ITB) / Institute of biomedical technologies - ITB is established to pioneer new types of cross-disciplinary biomedical research by bringing biology, engineering, medicine, and the basic sciences together. This is achieved by means of collaborations between industry and basic scientists and clinicians from a broad range of disciplines. One of the most important aims of its research mission is translating fundamental discoveries into new bio-medical technologies. ITB research area cover several activities, including medical genomics, proteomics and nanotechnologies, molecular oncology, stem cell/cancer stem cell research, bioinformatics and system biology and comparative genomics, biology of neurodegenerative disease, immunobiology and cellular differentiation, epidemiology and medical informatics.

  • Istituto di Tecnologie Industriali e Automazione (ITIA) / Institute of Industrial Technologies and Automation - ITIA is an applied R&D centre. It has the main facilities in Milan, sections in Rome and Bari, and laboratory in Vigevano, with more than 100 people. Fields of application are machine tools, production systems for different sectors (shoes, wood, assembly, etc.) as well as Virtual and Augmented Reality application for products and processes design. ITIA has started to apply its knowledge in data modelling in several sectors. In details is applying ontologies and semantic web technologies both for the Virtual Factory as well for the Assisted Ambient Living.
